Below are some clips from the news of the new dog park underway in the Arts District.

“Ritcher asked whether the family would be interested in letting the neighborhood maintain the space as a dog park. “We will pay the taxes, buy some insurance, and make this into a jewel,” he told them. The pair got a feeling their pitch might have a chance when they saw a photo of the family dog prominently placed in the office.”

Much of the cleanup work needed to prepare the park for canines has already been done. Some 25 volunteers, many of them participants in the Wednesday night community walk, gathered in April to chop down the weeds and rake the land. They cleaned up an area where a fire-pit had been located, and got rid of everything from glass to knife blades to crack pipes, Saslow said.

This is a long time in coming — Richter tried to make another Arts District plot a dog park several years ago. It is also a tremendous win for Downtown, and the organizers deserve support in their effort. We can foresee this amenity becoming filled within days of its opening. Word of mouth, whether by speech or bark, will spread quickly.
